Truck Fire Challenges Local Firefighters

June 8, 2011 – Firefighters from Robbinsville Township and Bordentown Township battled a major tractor trailer fire on the New Jersey Turnpike amid blistering temperatures of 98° Fahrenheit.

Robbinsville and Bordentown firefighters were called to the mid-afternoon blaze at mile marker 58.0 southbound and arrived to find a car carrier on fire with four cars on the trailer fully involved in flames.  The driver of the truck said the fire started in the brakes of the trailer and quickly spread to the cars.

Recognizing the need for additional water supply and manpower, assistance was immediately requested for extra companies to respond.  Water tenders from Upper Freehold and Crosswicks and one engine from Hamilton Township District 9 responded to assist.  Crosswicks’ Tender 261 and Hamilton Township Engine 19 were able to stage on Uncle Pete’s Road and hand stretch a supply line to Robbinsville Engine 40 while Tender 82-1 from Upper Freehold responded directly onto the Turnpike.

Firefighter rehab was performed at the scene by EMTs from Capital Health System.  There were no injuries.  Senior Fire Captain Dennis Symons was the incident commander.
